Volumetric Details
Volumetric weight (also known as dimensional weight) is a shipping calculation method that reflects the density of a package.
It’s used by logistics companies to ensure they charge fairly when shipping large, lightweight items.
Volumetric weight is typically calculated by multiplying the dimensions of the package (length, width, and height) and then dividing by a dimensional factor,
which varies by carrier and unit system (e.g., 5000 for metric or 166 for imperial).
Formula for Volumetric Weight
Using metric units (cm and kg):
\text{Volumetric Weight (kg)} = \frac{\text{Length (cm) x Width (cm) x Height (cm)}}{5000}
Weight = (L cm*B cm*H cm)/5000
Using imperial units (inches and pounds):
\text{Volumetric Weight (lb)} = \frac{\text{Length (in) x Width (in) x Height (in)}}{166}
When shipping, the shipping fee is generally calculated based on
whichever is greater: the actual weight or the volumetric weight.
